Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify an example of a gas.
  1. Give students a list of objects and ask them to classify them as a solid, liquid, or gas.
  1. Classify at least five different solid, liquids, and gases and explain the characteristics for each group.
  1. Explain the differences between the states of matter.

    Water vapor, oxygen, carbon dioxide.

  • Solids:  book, wood, pencil
    Has a definite shape
    Does not take the shape of its container
    Has a definite volume
  • Liquids:  water, milk, soda
    Does not have a definite shape
    Will take the shape of its container
    Has a definite volume
  • Gas:  nitrogen, oxygen, helium
    Does not have a definite shape
    Sometimes take the shape of its container and sometimes is just all around
    Takes up whatever space is available to it
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • There are three different states of matter.
  • The different states of matter are solids, liquids, and gas.
  • Solids and liquids have a definite volume, but gas does not
  • Solids have a definite shape while liquids will take on the shape of the container
