Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define motion.
  1. How can you describe the motion of an object?
  1. A ball is rolling down a hill and there is a stick in its path. Predict what might happen to its motion.
  1. Javier says that everything is always moving.  Critique Javier’s statement.

  1. Motion is defined as the act or process of moving.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to: position, speed, direction, acceleration
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The stick might cause the ball to stop.
  • The stick might slow the ball down.
  • The stick might cause the ball to change directions
  • The stick might cause the ball to start moving up and down (bouncing)
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Javier is correct.
  • Movement is relative.
  • The Earth is always moving around the Sun.
  • Something may be at rest relative to another object, but is still moving.

       Example:  A book may not be moving in relation to the desk it is on, but it is still moving in relation to the sun.
