Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Define position.
  1. If something is beside you, what does that mean?
  1. Describe where your chair is in relation to you.                            
  1. Compare and contrast “on top of” and “behind”
  1. Greg says that “I am standing on top of the ball” and “the ball is below me” mean the same thing. Is Greg correct? Critique this statement.
  1. Develop a logical argument as to why it is important to be able to describe position.

  1. Position is defined as the place where something is in relation to other things.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • That means that thing is next to me.
  • That means that thing is to the right or left of me.
  1. Answers will be dependent on the actual position of the chair to the person.
    Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • My chair is below me.
  • I am on top of my chair.
  • My chair is next to me.
  • I am next to my chair.
  • My chair is in front of me.
  • My chair is behind me.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • They are both ways to state position.
  • On top of means that you are over an object or the object is below you.
  • Behind means the object is not in front of you.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Greg is correct.
  • If you are on top of something, that thing is also below you.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • It is important to describe position so that you are able to communicate where things are.
  • You might need to describe something’s position to someone, so you need to know how to do so.
  • If you do not know how to describe position, you might get confused when someone else does.
  • Position is important when trying to find something.
  • Position is important when giving directions to places.
