Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify two pieces of technology that have enhanced the study of Science.

  2. Identify two pieces of technology that have enhanced the medical field.
  1. How have computers enhanced Science in the classroom?

  2. Explain a weather-related technology that has enhanced meteorology.
  1. Explain how studying cells has been enhanced by the use of microscopes.

  2. Explain how studying space has been enhanced by the use of telescopes.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to: microscope, telescope, computers, apps (such as Google Earth), Doppler Radar, satellites

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to: microscope, X-ray machines, 3D printing, medical robots (such as da Vinci surgical system)

  3. Computers in the classroom allow access to up to date scientific information, and provide the resources to conduct research on concepts and current events. Certain websites and apps also enable students to view related images, watch videos and experience simulations (such as ones related to performing digital surgeries, and ecosystem simulations)

  4. Acceptable responses must include reference to a weather-related technology and an explanation of how it has enhanced meteorology.
Sample Response: Doppler Radar uses technology that is able to detect precipitation along with its intensity and velocity. This has enhanced meteorology because it gives scientists a live look on weather conditions and provides insight on how the storm is traveling and its strength, which provides data for them to make predictions about future conditions.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to: Microscopes have enabled scientists to see what was once unseen because it was too small to be seen with the naked eye. Being able to see cells and its components, scientists have been able to gain insight on life functions, genetics, and the prevention and treatment of illnesses and diseases.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to: Telescopes have allowed scientists to gain knowledge about objects far away in our solar system, galaxy, and universe. As telescopes become more advanced, scientists are able to learn more about locations further and further away, and receive more detailed information.  In our solar system, telescopes help make assumptions about the planets’ atmospheres, surfaces, and composition. Although many places in our universe are too far to travel to, telescopes help us gain knowledge about what exists in the vast unknown.
