Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Nuclear energy is becoming a more popular form of energy in countries throughout the world.   Below are some facts about nuclear energy.  Identify if each fact would have a positive or negative effect.

    1. Uranium, a nonrenewable resource, must be mined to use for fuel for nuclear energy.
    2. A small amount of fuel is necessary to produce a large amount of energy.
    3. The waste products are harmful to humans and the environment.
    4. Nuclear energy releases much less greenhouse gases than burning fossil fuels.

  2. Electric cars are becoming more popular among travelers.  Below are some facts about electric cars.  Identify if each fact would have a positive or negative effect.

    1. Electric cars reduce the amount of gasoline used by travelers.
    2. Electric cars reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
    3. Many electric cars need to be plugged in at a home or recharging station to recharge overnight (about 8 hours).
  1. NASA is constantly studying space and developing new programs to explore our universe.  In the future, NASA may create a community on another planet.  List three positive and three negative effects this new community may have for people living on Earth.

  2. Medical professionals are constantly studying diseases and testing possibilities to prevent and treat them.  List three positive and three negative potential effects of researching the prevention and treatment of diseases.
  1. Your community is planning to install solar panels to create energy for homes and businesses in the area.  Write a letter to the mayor explaining the benefits of solar energy and informing him or her of the negative effects that may or may not have been addressed at community planning meetings.
