Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity

  1. Your teacher often has trouble getting his projector to display an image from his computer.  List three reasons why he may be having difficulty.
  1. Below is a diagram of a circuit that Tom built.  He cannot figure out why the bulb won’t light up.  Why won’t the bulb light up?  How can Tom fix the problem?

  1. The governor proposes to build a solar farm in Clear Creek State Forest in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.  Do you think this is a suitable construction site?  Explain your reasoning.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • The projector bulb is broken.
    • The projector is not connected to the computer.
    • The wires connecting the computer to the projector are broken.
    • The projector is not connected to a power source properly.
    • The computer is not in the correct display mode to show images on a projector.
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Tom built an open circuit.
    • A circuit must be closed in order for electricity to flow properly.
    • Since the circuit is open, the flow of electricity is interrupted.
    • Tom should complete the circuit using more wire to make it function properly.
    • If he closes the circuit with more wire, the bulb with light up when the circuit is turned on.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Solar panels need a lot of sunlight to create energy.
    • Investing in a solar farm is unreasonable unless the site will receive a lot of sunlight.
    • A forest creates a lot of shaded areas.
    • If a solar farm is constructed in a forest, the panels will not receive a lot of sunlight.
    • The solar farm should not be constructed in Clear Creek State Forest because the solar panels will not receive a lot of sun.  Therefore, they will not produce a lot of energy.
    • It is an unwise investment to build the solar farm in Clear Creek State Forest.
    • The solar farm should be constructed where the panels will receive a lot of sunlight.
