Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. How do you think your life would be different if smart phones had never been invented?  Discuss three (3) aspects of your life that may be different.
  1. Scientists can now use motion detectors to help study velocity and acceleration and analyze motion.  Do you recommend using a motion detector to study motion?  Discuss three (3) advantages and three (3) disadvantages to support your reasoning.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Ability to study cells
    • Ability to study atoms
    • Ability to study bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi – has led to vaccines, antibiotics, and other medicines

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Entertainment
    • Faster method to be informed of news
    • Ability to check weather report (convenience)
    • Educational programs
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Could not make phone calls at any time
    • Could not make phone calls from any location
    • Caller would need to use a pay phone or ask to use a land line phone.
    • Could not send text messages
    • Could not access the internet at any time or in any place
    • Could not play games at any time or in any location
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Motion detectors record accurate data.
    • Motion detectors will save time.
    • Software will usually record and graph data automatically and immediately.
    • Software program will create an accurate graph or representation of data.
    • Motion detectors are fragile.
    • Motion detectors require electricity.
    • In order to record and/or graph data, motion detectors require a computer and a specific software program.
    • In order to work properly, motion detectors must be calibrated.
    • Scientist may not fully grasp the concepts that are being illustrated if a software program does all of the calculations automatically.
    • Scientist is unable to perform or repeat experiments without motion detector if a computer or electricity is unavailable.
