Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What 2 things are needed to make an inference?
  1. This graph shows student grades in Mrs. Wilson’s 7th grade math class.  Make 1 observation and 1 inference about Mrs. Wilson’s class based on the graph.

  1. Below is a chart displaying the average monthly rainfall in Phoenix, Arizona.  What can you infer about the climate and/or the location of Phoenix based on this chart?
  1. The graph below shows the motion of a bus.  John says that from point B to point C the bus was stopped.  Do you agree or disagree?  Explain your reasoning.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Observations and prior knowledge are needed to make inferences.
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

Observations:

  • Most of the students (54%) have grades in the 90's.
  • 29% of students have grades in the 80's.
  • 17% of students have grades in the 70's.
  • There are no students with grades less than 70%
  • There are no students with a grade of 100%.

Inferences:

  • Mrs. Wilson’s class is easy.
  • Mrs. Wilson’s students are good at math.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Phoenix receives very little precipitation each year.
    • Phoenix is very dry.
    • Phoenix is very hot, especially in April, May, and June.
    • It is located in the desert.
    • Phoenix experiences the rain shadow effect due to the mountains to the west of the city.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • No, this is a speed versus time graph.
    • The speed was at 6 m/s at point B and C, therefore it was still moving.
    • This means that the bus was moving at a constant speed.
    • The bus was not stopped because its speed was not zero.
    • No, zero speed is indicated by a straight line along the x-axis, such as from point D to point E.
