Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define lifecycle.
  1. Summarize the lifecycle of a flowering plant.

  2. How is the lifecycle of a frog similar to the lifecycle of a human?  How is it different?
  1. A monarch butterfly’s lifecycle lasts between 6 and 8 weeks.  A caterpillar grows inside an egg for about 4 days.  When the caterpillar hatches, it eats a lot for about 14 days.  Finally, the caterpillar is enters a chrysalis.  It is in the chrysalis for about 10 days.  It takes about 28 days for this whole process to occur and for an adult butterfly to emerge from the chrysalis.  When the adult emerges, it is ready to mate so the females can lay eggs.  Why do you think the monarch butterfly enters its reproduction stage after 28 day, but a human takes many years?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A lifecycle is the changes that occur in an organism from its birth to its death.
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • A seed is germinated.  A plant begins to sprout from the seed.
    • The plant grows roots into the soil and a stem and leaves above the ground.
    • The plant is fertilized by insects.  Pollen is carried between plants.
    • The male pollen pollinates the female ovum, and seeds are created.
    •  The parent plant releases seeds.
    • The seeds are scattered by animals, the wind, rain, or other means.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Begin as eggs.
    • Eggs need to be fertilized.
    • Humans have a live birth.
    • Frogs hatch from eggs.
    • Frogs begin their life in water.
    • Frogs will grow legs.
    • Humans develop in their mother’s womb.
    • Both live on land (frogs in adult stage).
    • Both breathe oxygen (frogs in adult stage).
    • Both reproduce in adult stage.
    • Need a male and female to produce offspring.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Must reproduce quickly so the species does not become extinct
    • May die because of cold weather
    • Only a short period of warm weather suitable for butterflies to survive
    • May be eaten by predators
