Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

  1. An animal’s physical characteristics and behaviors both play a role in its survival in the wild.  Which do you think is more important in ensuring the animal’s survival?  Use facts to explain your reasoning.

  1. A gene is a unit of hereditary that is passed from a parent to its offspring.  One gene is linked to a specific trait or characteristic of the offspring.
  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Hair color
    • Eye color
    • Skin color
    • Earlobe attachment
    • Cleft chin
    • Dimples
    • Tongue rolling
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Brown rabbit would survive better in the forest because the brown color will blend in with surroundings.  Predators would have difficulty finding it.
    • White color would stand out in a forest, which would make it easier for predators to find.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • White rabbit would survive in the Arctic better.
    • White rabbit would blend in with Arctic snow.  Predators would have difficulty finding it.
    • White rabbit has more fur to keep it warm in cold temperatures.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Physical characteristics could camouflage an animal.
    • Physical characteristics could help an animal move more quickly or more quietly.
    • Physical characteristics may help the animal be a better hunter.
    • Behaviors may help the animal trick predators.
    • Behaviors may help the animal stay out of harm’s way.
    • Behaviors may be easier to adapt to better suit the animal’s environment.
