Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Define a physical adaptation.  Give 3 examples.

  2. Define a behavioral adaptation.  Give 3 examples.

  3. Define a physiological adaptation.  Give 3 examples.
  1. There are many plants and animals that live in a lentic ecosystem and rely on the water supply.  If the lake were to dry up due to an ongoing drought, predict three ways in which you would expect the plants and animals to adapt in order to survive in the area.
  1. A black bear has physical and behavioral adaptations to survive in its forest ecosystem.  What are some new adaptations a black bear would need if it were moved to a desert ecosystem?  Explain why it would need these new adaptations to survive.

  2. How are adaptations related to genes?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A physical adaptation is a change in the physical characteristics of an organism.
Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Long beaks
    • Webbed feet
    • Sharp claws
    • Feathers
    • Camouflage
    • Sharp teeth
  1. A behavioral adaption is a behavior that animals perform to help them survive.
Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Diet
    • Hibernation
    • Migration

  2. A physiological adaption is an adaptation that occurs within body, organs, or tissue of a plant or animal.
Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • A snake can make venom.
    • Phototropism
    • Sticky saliva
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Plants would develop shallow roots.
    • Plants would develop waxy leaves to decrease evaporation.
    • Frogs would live only on land.
    • Animals that ate fish would find other food sources.
    • Animals would find other sources for water or develop the ability to hold water within their bodies.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • The bear would need thinner hair so it wouldn’t overheat.
    • The black bear would not camouflage with the environment well.  It should change the color of its hair.
    • The bear would have to change its diet because there aren’t any fish, grasses or berries.
    • Temperatures will not be low enough for the bears to hibernate.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Genes are passed down from parents to offspring.
    • If a parent has a gene for a weak adaptation, it may be passed down to its offspring.
    • If a parent has a gene for a strong adaptation, it may be passed down to its offspring.
