Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List 3 negative impacts burning coal has on our environment.
  1. Using a graph that shows the concentration of CO₂ at the South Pole over the years, explain what it shows. Based on the graph, draw 2 conclusions about the use of fossil fuels.
  1. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has become a widespread practice in Pennsylvania for obtaining natural gas.  There are many consequences of fracking.  Do you think the risks of fracking are worth the benefits of using natural gas as a source of energy?  Use facts to defend you position.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Air pollution
    • Acid rain
    • Water pollution
    • Global warming
    • Increase in greenhouse gases
  1. Answers will vary depending on the graph provided, answers could resemble these possible responses:
    • The graph shows the amount of carbon dioxide that was found in the air at the South Pole between 1990 and 2005.
    • Human activity is causing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to increase greatly.
    • Humans will cause a great deal of damage to the atmosphere and the Earth if they continue burning fossil fuels at this rate.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Harmful chemicals are associated with the process of fracking.
    • Causes harmful air emissions
    • Causes water contamination
    • Difficult to dispose of waste materials
    • The chemicals used are said to cause disease in people near the wells.
    • Surface area of wells is decreased because the wells are drilled horizontally underground.
    • Economic benefits
    • Burning natural gas does not release as much carbon dioxide as burning coal
    • Use of natural gas decreases energy prices
