Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What is a compound?

  2. What is a mixture?
  1. How is a solution like a mixture?  How are they different?

  2. How is a compound like a molecule?  How are they different?
  1. Drew is confused about why salt water is considered a solution, but water and oil is considered a mixture.  Explain the difference between a mixture and a solution.  What facts can you use to support your explanation about the solubility of salt versus the insolubility of oil in water?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A compound is a substance that is made of two or more different types of atoms bonded together.

  2. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that do not combine chemically.  Mixtures can be separated by physical means.

  3. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

Similarities:

  • The substances in a solution remain the same solution.
  • All of the substances in a mixture remain the same substance.

Differences:

  • A mixture is a combination or two or more substances that do not combine chemically.
  • Mixtures can be separated by physical means.
  • Mixtures are heterogeneous.
  • A solution is a mixture that is homogeneous.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

Similarities:

  • A compound is a group of atoms bonded together.
  • A molecule is a group of atoms bonded together.

Differences:

  • A compound is a group of more than one element.
  • A molecule is a group of only one type of element.
  • Molecules often help form compounds.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that do not combine chemically.
  • Mixtures can be heterogeneous.
  • A solution is a mixture that is homogeneous.
  • Salt is soluble in water.
  • Oil is insoluble in water.
  • Water is a polar substance.
  • The positive part of water molecules attracts the negative chloride ions in salt.
  • The negative part of water molecules attracts the positive sodium ions.
  • Oil is a nonpolar substance.
  • Oil molecules are not attracted to water molecules, so water will not dissolve oil.
