Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What is an illustration?
  1. What part of the setting is shown in the illustration?
  1. Describe the mood shown in the illustration.

  2. Based on the illustration, make a prediction about what will happen in this part of the story. After reading, tell whether your prediction was correct.

  2. Explain how the illustration helps you understand the story. Use details from both the illustration and the text.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students should explain that an illustration is a drawing that goes with a story.

  2. Students should identify the location shown in the illustration.

  3. Students should use the details in the illustration to determine the mood of the picture. They should focus on the facial expressions of characters, colors used by the illustrators, and/or details in the setting.

  4. Students will view an illustration before reading part of a story. They should use the picture to make a prediction about this part of the story. The prediction should have an obvious connection to the illustration. After reading, students will discuss whether their prediction was accurate or not.

  5. Students should draw in illustration to go with a given part of a story. They should incorporate the characters involved as well as details about the setting. The picture should capture the most important event that took place during this part of the story.

  6. Students should show the connection between the illustration and the text. They should provide specific details shown in the illustration and tell how they relate to specific details in the story. They discuss the characters involved, their actions and feelings during this illustrated event, and the setting in which the event takes place.
