Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What information from the text shows the setting of the story?
  1. Under which heading would I find information about the following?
  1. What words or actions of the main character help you to understand how that character is feeling throughout the story?
  1. What does the following word from the passage mean? Tell the context clues that help show this meaning.
  1. Create a title for the following passage. Use details from the passage to show why this would be a good title.
  1. Read the passage to determine the theme of the story. What events or details in the story show this theme?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students should identify information from the text that tells where the story is taking place.
  1. Students will choose the appropriate heading for locating given information.
  1. Students should identify what the main character is saying or doing throughout the passage that helps show how the character is feeling throughout the story. They should include specific words or phrases that indicate an emotion.
  1. Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of a given word.
  1. Students will create a title appropriate for a passage. They should use specific details from the passage to show why their title is a good choice. There should be a clear connection between the title and the evidence.
  1. Students will use details and events from the passage to determine the theme of the story. The evidence provided by the student should show how the author developed this lesson throughout the passage.
