Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify the main idea of a text read aloud.

  2. Recall and restate information that has been presented in diverse media formats.
  1. Summarize the information read aloud or presented in diverse media or other formats.
  1. Assess both an original text and a paraphrased version of the text. Determine whether the listener understood the information and created an appropriate summary/paraphrase.

  2. Construct a statement or paragraph that paraphrases information from a visual, quantitative, or oral presentation.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will listen to a text read aloud, and will identify and restate the main idea of the text. Look for the student to listen carefully and locate the main idea without seeing the passage in print. Common difficulties with this skill include remembering on the end of the passage, being unable to remember enough to determine the main idea, and not being able to process the passage as it is read aloud.

  2. The student will recall information presented in a variety of formats (e.g. video, computer, visually), and will restate that information. The student should show that he/she understands the information presented, and is able to share that information with others. Look for the student to determine the main ideas and important information from the original and paraphrase it to show the intent and important ideas.

  3. The student will provide a summary of information presented in a variety of formats. The student should show understanding of the information presented by crafting a verbal or written summary that details the main idea and important information from the source. Common errors include simply retelling or listing the information, rather than paraphrasing and crafting a new document.

  4. The student will assess a given text and a given summary or paraphrased version of the text, and will determine if the summary is an accurate representation of the original text. The student should determine what information is important from the original, and should ensure that it is represented in the summary version. Look for the student to decide if the summary version is complete, and if it tells the same story as the original.

  5. The student will review a visual, quantitative, or oral presentation, and will craft a paraphrased document detailing the relevant points. The student should show understanding of how information is presented in multiple and varied formats, selecting the most important information from the presentation. Look for the student to carefully review the presentation, discern what information is most important, and put that information into his/her own words.
