Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will list unfamiliar vocabulary words when reading a grade-level literary non-fiction or informational text.  After listing these words, student should use a dictionary or online reference to determine the meaning of those words.  Student can keep track of these words in a journal or a notebook or a simple Google form can be created by the teacher for student to fill in with these unfamiliar words.  Then, these words can become the center of a mini-lesson in preparation for a vocabulary review or quiz.

  2. Student will use context clues to infer meaning to unfamiliar vocabulary words in grade-level literary non-fiction or informational texts.  Context clues can include words in the sentence that hint at the unfamiliar word’s meaning; antonyms or synonyms; word sound-alikes; or other details in the sentence that gives clues to the word’s meaning.

  3. Using a website such as http://www.readworks.org/, student should read texts on grade level and in increasing complexity and answer the multiple choice questions and short response questions at the end of each passage.  Passages can be chosen based on grade or Lexile level.  Teacher can recreate these passages into Google documents/Google forms for paperless reading or can provide print versions.  Answers are given at the end of each reading passage.
