Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

The Checks for Understandings below are designed as a guide for instruction. They represent a continuum of activities that teachers may use to move students to mastery.

  1. Identify different mediums used to present a particular topic or idea. 

  2. Identify an advantage and a disadvantage of using different mediums to present a particular topic or idea.
  1. Construct a Venn diagram comparing two given mediums.

  2. Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of using a given medium to present a particular topic or idea.
     
  3. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of different mediums’ ability to present a particular topic or idea.
  1. Evaluate, with evidence, the effect of using different mediums to present a particular topic or idea.

  2. Explain the relative effectiveness of different mediums to present a particular topic or idea. 

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies different medium used to present a particular topic or idea. These mediums include, but are not limited to, print or digital texts, video, or multimedia presentations.  

  2. Student identifies the advantages and disadvantages of various mediums used to present information on a particular topic or idea. The advantages and disadvantages identified include, but are not limited to, the impact of various mediums on the purpose and perspective of an author, and how this impacts the presentation of a particular topic or idea.

  3. For each comparison, acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The use of language, image, or sound to communicate a message or idea
  • The utility of the selected medium to communicate a message or idea
  • The relationship between the selected medium and an intended audience
  • The impact of the message or idea on the intended audience
  1. Student accurately summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the given medium used to present a particular topic or idea. The description displays an understanding of the mediums’ strengths and limitations to present a particular topic or idea.

  2. Student compares and contrasts the advantages and disadvantages of various mediums used to present a particular topic or idea.  

  3. Student evaluates the effect of various mediums on the presentation of a particular topic or idea through the use of direct and supportive evidence derived from the medium being evaluated.

  4. Student explains the relative effectiveness of different mediums to present a particular topic or idea.
