Answer Key/Rubric

1. Student will list unfamiliar vocabulary words when reading a grade-level literary fiction.  After listing these words, student should use a dictionary or online reference to determine the meaning of those words.  Student can keep track of these words in a journal or a notebook or a simple Google form can be created by the teacher for student to fill in with these unfamiliar words.  Then, these words can become the center of a mini-lesson in preparation for a vocabulary review or quiz.
   
   
2. Student will use context clues to infer meaning to unfamiliar vocabulary words in grade-level literary fiction.  Context clues can include words in the sentence that hint at the unfamiliar word’s meaning; antonyms or synonyms; word sound-alikes; or other details in the sentence that gives clues to the word’s meaning.
   
   
3. Student will predict future events in a literary fiction using context clues and hints given through foreshadowing.  Student will demonstrate an understanding of the literary fiction in formulating these predictions and will cite textual evidence in support of their predictions.
   
   
4. Using a website such as http://www.readworks.org/, student should read texts on grade level and in increasing complexity and answer the multiple choice questions and short response questions at the end of each passage.  Passages can be chosen based on grade or Lexile level.  Teacher can recreate these passages into Google documents/Google forms for paperless reading or can print out.  Answers are given at the end of each reading passage.
   
   
5. Student will demonstrate an ability to read literary fiction in increasing complexity based on grade level.  Lists of literary fiction can be found on sites such as Scholastic Books http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ or from Lexile https://lexile.com/findabook/.  These can be read independently and student can keep a reading log or these can be read during “Drop Everything and Read” time with teacher monitoring progress through discussion with student.  Student will be able to evaluate the role of conflict, characterization, setting, plot structure, and other elements in advancing the plot and themes, pointing to specific, text-based details.
