Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student recognizes different types of questions that can be generated as part of a short research project. Student correctly identifies researchable and debatable questions related to a key idea or concept as forming a basis for inquiry.

  2. Student locates several sources of information that can be used to answer a question that is part of a short research project. The materials identified may include print and digital sources.

  3. Student summarizes information gathered from several sources to respond to a research question. The student correctly uses key details from sources relevant to a research question to respond to the question. The student correctly summarizes a variety of different sources to respond to a single research question.

  4. Student applies information gathered from different sources to respond to a research question and to generate additional related, focused questions. The student accurately applies gathered information to narrow and focus a research topic. This process includes, but is not limited to, generating new question related to the causes and implications of the initial research question. The student may also use opposing positions or ideas to generate additional questions.   

  5. Student synthesizes information gathered from several sources to respond to a research question that is part of a short research project. The student accurately combines information gathered from various sources into a single response to a research question. This synthesis is substantiated through clearly identifiable evidence from different sources in the student’s response to a research question.

  6. Student draws conclusions from information derived from several sources to generate additional related and focused research questions. Accurate conclusions and additional research questions include inferences that are made using three or more sources.
