Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Identify different media formats that can be used to present certain information.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies different media formats that can be used to present certain information. Different media formats include, but are not limited to, print, video, audio, and image. Diverse media also includes multimedia formats that combine video, music, images and/or text.

  2. Student states different motives behind the presentation of information in diverse media formats. The motives are connected to a speaker’s purpose for delivering information. A speaker’s purpose includes, but is not limited to, to inform, to explain, to persuade, and to entertain. The student correctly identifies the motives for presenting information in diverse media formats. The motives include social, commercial, and political.  

  3. Student compares the reasons for presenting information in two or more different media formats. Using direct evidence from the media formats, the student identifies similarities and differences in the function, form, motive, and meaning of the formats.

  4. Student explains the relationship between a media format and the motives for presenting information in that media format. The student correctly matches a specific medium with its purpose, intended audience, content, and motive. For example, a television commercial may include narration, video, and music as multimedia elements in order to persuade an intended audience to buy a particular project.

  5. Student analyzes the effectiveness of communicating information in particular media formats. The student analyzes a speaker’s decision to include particular media formats in a presentation. The analysis describes the effectiveness of the speaker’s purpose, content, and its effect on an intended audience.

  6. Student evaluates the effectiveness of a speaker’s motive for using a diverse media format to present information. The student correctly identifies a speaker’s motive for incorporating diverse media formats into a presentation. These motives include social, commercial, and political. The student explains the extent to which a speaker, through the use of diverse media formats, effectively communicates these motives.
