Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Name organizational patterns that authors use when writing stories.
  1. What organizational pattern was used to write this text?
  1. What words helped you understand the organization of the text?
  1. What is the connection between the following sentence and the main idea of the paragraph?
  1. Explain how the organizational pattern used by the author was effective in presenting information.
  1. Given a topic, explain how you would organize the writing to help readers best understand the information, and why this would be the best strategy.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will list organizational strategies such as compare/contrast, cause/effect, and sequence.
  1. Students will identify the structure of the text used by the author. They will determine that the author used compare/contrast, cause/effect, or sequence.
  1. Students will identify words that helped reveal the organization of the text. They should recognize words such as, but not limited to because and therefore, similar and unlike, and first, next, then and last.
  1. Students will explain how the given sentence is connected to the main idea of the paragraph. They will discuss how the sentence either supports or helps to explain the main idea.
  1. Students will explain how the text structure effectively presented the information in a way that made it easy to understand. Their reasons should be based on the content of the passage, as well as the purpose of the author.
  1. Students would state an organizational strategy and provide proper reasons for using this strategy. They will explain why the strategy lends itself easily to the topic given to the students. They will include the proper words that would be used to carry the strategy out.
