Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Record author’s use of facts and opinions on chart.

  2. Sort given statements into fact and opinion.
  1. Identify the claim in an informational reading passage.

  2. Identify the supporting details from an informational reading passage and add one of your own.
  1. Write a summary of an informational reading passage citing evidence found from the reading.

  2. Critique the claim and reasons used by the author of a reading passage to offer a counterclaim.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will create a list of the opinions found in an informational text.  Teacher will provide the claim and the student will identify the supporting evidence.

  2. Student will sort given statements into the headings of fact and opinion.  Student may use a graphic organizer to sort the statements.

  1. Student is given an informational reading passage.  Student will correctly identify the claim (or opinion) of the passage.  Student should display differentiation of the supporting evidence and the claim itself.

  2. Student will identify the supporting details from an informational text that supports the claim.  Student will add an additional supporting detail that he/she creates.

  3. Student will write a summary of an informational reading passage, citing evidence found in the text. 

  4. Student will critique the claim and supporting details in a persuasive reading passage.  Student will generate a counter claim and will provide evidence and details to support this counter claim.
