Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define the unknown words from given sentences.

  2. Identify the Greek and Latin affixes and roots of unknown words from given sentences.  Define these words using these Greek and Latin roots.
  1. Identify & define Greek and Latin roots in given words.

  2. Use context clues to define key phrases in given informational reading passage.
  1. Construct & define a list of words using common Greek & Latin roots.

  2. Use the phrases found in the given informational reading passage to write a new summary of the reading passage.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student reads given sentences and uses the context clues within the sentences to define any unknown words.

  2. Student identifies and defines Greek and Latin affixes and roots in a given set of sentences. The student should draw on their prior knowledge of the affixes and roots to arrive at a definition.

  3. Student is given a set of words.  Student must define the words and create a list of the Greek & Latin roots found in the words.  Student should attempt to add words with these roots (or others) to the list.

  4. Student is given an informational reading passage.  Student should use only the context clues within the text to create definitions of the key phrases.

  5. Student will identify, define and list common Greek & Latin roots.  Student will create lists with these roots, their definitions and will add to the lists with words discovered in independent reading.  Student may discover new roots.

  6. Student will read an informational reading passage and identify key phrases. Student will use these key phrases to construct a summary of the reading passage.  The meaning of the key phrase should remain the same, the student should create new context to support the key phrase.  For example, text given provides the phrase “Building the new community center seemed like a herculean task, but small efforts each day really add up.”  Student would create a summary using “Herculean task/effort”.
