Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify dialogue in a reading passage.

  2. Match the dialogue to the character from a given narrative reading passage.
  1. Create dialogue interactions between two given characters.

  2. Integrate dialogue into narrative writing.
  1. Recreate an event from a narrative reading passage from a different character’s perspective.

  2. Formulate internal dialogue for a character in a narrative reading passage based on known events and character traits from a given reading passage.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will read a narrative reading passage and correctly identify the dialogue found within.

  2. Student will read a narrative reading passage.  Student will then match the dialogue from the reading passage with the character(s) who participated in the dialogue.  This may be given to students in a list/matching format or directly from the reading passage.

  3. Student will create dialogue interactions between two given characters.  Characters may come from a teacher provided reading or from two (or more) known characters.  This could be integrated into other subjects. For example, in Social Studies, the student could create a dialogue between the troops and George Washington at Valley Forge.

  4. Student will review their own piece of narrative writing and identify areas where dialogue can be added.  Dialogue in a narrative can help provide insights into a character’s thoughts and motivations.  The dialogue should add to the story or the character’s profile; it should be inserted with careful consideration.

  5. Student reads a narrative reading passage and selects an event from the story to tell through another character’s point of view.  This event should include details found in the original reading passage but should be colored with the new character’s perspective.  Student should use character traits and inferences about the character’s motivations to recreate the event.

  6. Student will read a given narrative writing piece and focus on a character’s actions.  Student will construct internal thoughts and dialogue the character may have had during a scene/event.  Student’s response should be consistent with the character’s actions and known character traits.
