Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify the frequently confused word in a sentence and determine if the correct word has been used or not.

  2. Complete each sentence with the word from the word bank that makes the most sense.
  1. Select two sets of frequently confused words (e.g. to/two/too, there/they’re/their) and construct a sentence showing correct usage of each word in the set.

  2. Use context clues to determine if the commonly confused word in the sentences is correct.
  1. Assess and revise own writing for correct usage of commonly confused words.

  2. Critically assess a narrative writing sample for correct usage of commonly confused words, revising the sample as necessary to include correct usage.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will be given a set of sentences that contain frequently confused words (to/too/two, through/threw, etc.). The student should identify the word that might be confused, and then determine if the sentence is correct as is, or if the commonly confused word needs to be changed to make the sentence make sense. If the word needs to be changed, the student will substitute the correct word.
  1. The student will be provided with a set of sentences that should contain frequently confused words (i.e. My mother went ____ the store.) The student will choose, from a word bank, the correct word to fill in the blank.
  1. The student will choose two sets of commonly confused words and will construct a sentence correctly using each word in the set. The student should create sentences that use the word in their intended format. A sentence such as “There is a commonly confused word.” would not be acceptable. Look for the student to create varied sentences that properly use each of the words in the set.
  1. The student will be given a set of sentences containing a commonly confused word. The word will be used incorrectly in at least half of the sentences (e.g. “My mother went two the store.”). The student will use context clues to determine if the word in the sentence is the proper selection, and, if not, will provide the correct word choice. The student should be provided with a variety of commonly confused words, appropriate to his or her academic level.
  1. The student will critically assess and revise his/her own writing for usage of commonly confused words. The student should locate instances of commonly confused words in his/her own writing and should determine, in each case, whether the correct instance of the word was used. Watch for students to understand what words are commonly confused and for their understanding of how to use each in their writing.
  1. The student will critically assess and revise a provided narrative passage to determine if the author has correctly used commonly confused words. The student should revise any instances of incorrect usage, and should be able to explain his/her reasoning for determining that other usages are correct. Common errors may include replacing or changing all instances of a commonly confused word without regard to whether it is used properly and not understanding which words may be commonly confused.
