Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will be given a list of antecedents (nouns) and a word bank of pronouns. The student will match each antecedent to an appropriate pronoun. Common errors include using “they” for nouns that could represent either gender – e.g. teacher/they rather than teacher/him or her.
  1. Given a set of sentences, the student will mark the subject and verb in each. The student will recognize whether or not the subject and verb agree. Be sure to provide sentences with a variety of different tenses and situations, including some that do not show subject verb agreement. Look for evidence that the student can apply this knowledge in a variety of contexts.
  1. The student will compare pronoun/antecedent agreement with subject/verb agreement and will determine the similarities and differences between them. Answers may include, but are not limited to:

    1. Pronoun/antecedent pairs do not include a verb
    2. Both types of agreement must include number agreement
    3. Pronoun/antecedent requires gender agreement as well.
    4. Subject/verb agreement may not include a noun (having a pronoun instead)
  1. The student will correctly classify nouns and pronouns as being singular or plural and masculine or feminine. Look for evidence that the student understands how to determine the characteristics of nouns and pronouns. This is an essential building block for creating sentences with internal agreement.
  1. The student will revise a provided paragraph to ensure proper subject/verb agreement and pronoun/antecedent agreement. The student will independently locate instances where the agreement is incorrect and will make the necessary changes to correct it. Look for the student to locate agreement discrepancies for both types of agreement, and for them to show understanding of how to edit sentences for agreement.
  1. The student will craft an explanation of why it is important to use agreement when writing. Look for the student to understand that agreement provides clarity, concise writing, and ease of understanding for their audience. The student will provide relevant examples to illustrate their answer if necessary.
