  2. Label the conjunction and the independent clauses in each compound sentence.
  1. Given two independent clauses, create a compound sentence, using an appropriate conjunction and punctuation.
  1. Critically assess and revise a paragraph for comma use with conjunctions in compound sentences.

  2. Assess the provided sentences and determine which sentences are compound sentences and which illustrate other uses of commas and conjunctions.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will identify the sentence in a given set that correctly uses a comma before a conjunction to create a compound sentence. The sentences given should include a variety of conjunctions. The incorrect examples may include lists, sentences that do not require commas, or incorrectly formatted compound sentences as determined by the teacher.
  1. The student will mark each sentence in a given set to show the conjunction used and the independent clauses that create the compound sentence. Look for the student to understand that the compound sentence is created from two sentences that are able to stand alone as independent sentences.
  1. The student will combine two given independent clauses into a compound sentence. The student will select a conjunction that makes sense, and will appropriately place a comma before the conjunction. Watch for students to choose the best conjunction, and to place the sentences in an order that makes sense.
  1. The student will revise a provided paragraph to correct comma and conjunction use in compound sentences. The paragraph should include both correct and incorrect examples, requiring that the student be able to identify correct usage when determining what to revise. Look for the student to select the incorrect instances of comma and conjunction use in compound sentences and to correct them.
  1. The student will differentiate between compound sentences and other uses of commas and conjunctions. The student should be provided with a set of sentences including compound sentences, lists, conjunctions combining clauses that are not independent, etc. The student should be able to explain what characteristics led to their decision about each sentence.
