Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify places in writing that already use a word, phrase or clause to link opinions and reasons.

  2. List words, phrases and clauses that could be used to link ideas within and across categories in a writing piece to connect information.
  1. Construct sentences that link ideas using an appropriate connecting word or phrase.

  2. Compare 2 sets of sentences and identify the best uses of linking ideas using connecting words or phrases.
  1. Revise a given writing sample to demonstrate correct usage of linking words, phrases.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student reads a given reading passage and identifies the usage of linking words, phrases or clauses.  Student will mark the reading passage identifying these linking words or phrases.

  2. Student generates a list of words, phrases or clauses that could be used to link and connect information.

  3. Student constructs a sentence that links elements in an informational writing piece.  Connecting words/phrases should be used accurately and meaningfully.

  4. Student will compare two sets of sentences and identify the best/correct use of linking words/phrases.  The linking words/phrases should not be forced, their usage should be a natural linking.

  5. Student revises a writing sample to demonstrate correct usage of linking words or phrases.  Student will critically evaluate the writing to determine where these connections can be smoothly integrated.  Connecting words/phrases should be used accurately and meaningfully.
