Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List words and phrases that could be used in a concluding section to show it was based on analysis.

  2. List information from a given selection that supports the concluding selection provided.
  1. Compare two concluding statements or selections and determine which best supports a given selection.

  2. Determine whether a series of concluding statements meet the criteria of a concluding statement based on analysis.
  1. When given a passage with a concluding section already written, determine whether the concluding section is related to the analysis and provide a critique of the section.

  2. Formulate a concluding statement or selection for a given selection that is related to the analysis presented in the selection.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student will generate a list of words and phrases that would commonly be found in concluding statements based on analysis. Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to: therefore, as you can see, as evidenced by.

  2. The student will be provided with a reading selection that includes a concluding statement based on analysis. The student will determine what information from the selection supports the concluding statement. Look for the student to understand how the analysis is related to the statements in the conclusion.

  3. The student will be given two concluding statements for the same selection. The student will compare the two concluding statements and will identify which best supports the selection. The student will be able to explain his or her choice as it relates to the analysis of the selection. Look for the student to determine the analysis of the selection, and then to identify which concluding section best represents that analysis. The student should be able to explain their choice with supporting details from the document.

  4. The student will be given a series of selections that include a concluding statement. The selections will include both acceptable and unacceptable concluding statements. The student will categorize the statements as either examples or non-examples of concluding statements related to analysis after reading the selection. Student will be able to support choices with evidence from the text and their knowledge of concluding statements and analysis.

  5. The student will provide a critique of a given passage with a concluding section to determine if the concluding section or statement is related to the analysis provided. Look for the student to provide examples of the analysis and how it supports the concluding section or statement as well as to relate the information in the concluding section back to the analysis.

  6. The student will produce a concluding statement or selection that is clearly based on the analysis of a given selection. The student’s concluding statement should contain references to the analysis in the selection, and should follow the conventions of a well-written conclusion. Common errors include basing the conclusion on opinions generated by the selection rather than the analysis presented in the selection.
