Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies a writer’s intended purpose for writing argumentatively. The purpose of argumentative writing is to state a position that can be successfully argued and presented to an intended audience using evidence-based claims. Intended audiences for argumentative writing include individuals or groups a writer intends to persuade through the use of claims, supporting reasons, and deliberately selected evidence.

  2. Student identifies the purpose of a concluding section in argumentative writing. The purpose of a concluding section in argumentative writing is to reinforce the claims and reasons that establish a writer’s position.

  3. Student identifies the relationship between a concluding section and other sections of a written argumentative piece. The concluding section of a written argument relates to the other sections because it summarizes and reinforces the writer’s argument, claims, and overall position that are discussed in other sections of the piece.

  4. Student distinguishes a concluding section from other sections of argumentative writing. A concluding section is distinct from other sections of a written argument because the writer avoids introducing new information, evidence, or other claims in the conclusion that have not been previously introduced to the reader.

  5. Student constructs a concluding section for an original piece of argumentative writing that reinforces the claims and reasons presented. The concluding section constructed displays evidence of thoughtful choices made by the student to rationally reinforce the claims and reasons presented in the argument. These choices include the use of concise language for clarity.

  6. Student evaluates the concluding section of a piece of argumentative writing to determine whether claims and reasons are effectively reinforced. Using direct evidence from a concluding section to a written argumentative text, the student considers whether or not the claims, position, and supporting reasons are supported for the intended audience.
