Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies the topic presented by a writer in informative/explanatory writing. Citing direct text evidence from a specific informative/explanatory text, the student states the topic of the text. The topic correctly identifies what the writer is explaining to the reader of the text.

  2. Student identifies the purpose of a concluding section in informative/explanatory writing. The purpose of a concluding section is to reinforce the facts, ideas, and concepts used by a writer to explain a topic.

  3. Student identifies the relationship between a concluding section and other sections of a written informative text. The concluding section of a written explanation relates to the other sections because it summarizes and reinforces the facts, ideas, and concepts used by a writer to explain a topic that are discussed in other sections of the piece.

  4. Student distinguishes a concluding section from other sections of a written informative/explanatory text. A concluding section is distinct from other sections of a written explanation because the writer avoids introducing new facts, ideas, or concepts in the conclusion that have not been previously introduced to the reader.

  5. Student constructs a written concluding section for an original informative/explanatory text that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented. The concluding section constructed displays evidence of thoughtful choices made by the student to rationally reinforce the facts, ideas, and concepts presented in the explanation. These choices include the use of concise language for clarity.

  6. Student evaluates the concluding section of an originally constructed piece of informative/explanatory writing to determine if it logically follows from and supports the information or explanation presented. Using direct evidence from a concluding section to a written informative text, the student considers whether or not the section follows from and relates to the information presented in the written piece.
