Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  1. Nicole owns 5 fewer than twice the pairs of shoes that Betty has.  Let s represent the number of shoes that Betty has.  Write an expression that will find the number of shoes that Nicole has.
  1. An online store charges $5 for shipping on all orders.  They are having a sale on all t-shirts, $7 each!  You and your friends are going to order some shirts.  Write an expression that you could use to find the cost of the order.
  1. A new streaming service is opening up.  They are offering new customers a great plan if they switch to them.  The monthly fee is going to be $15 plus $2.50 for each connected device.

a. If you connect t devices write an expression to find the monthly cost of your bill.
b. If you know that your family will connect 8 devices, how much would your monthly bill be?

  1. The teacher wrote the expression below on the board and asked students to write a statement to describe it.      (12 + 6) ÷ 3

Maddie wrote: 12 plus 6 divided by 3

Alex wrote:  The sum of 12 and 6 divided by 3

Steve wrote: The product of 12 and 6 divided by 3

       One student is correct, who is and why?

        Reasons may include, but are not limited to:

  • Alex used the words “the sum of” which means the addition problem had to be calculated prior to doing the division, which is what the () means
  • Maddie has the correct operations, but her expression would be 12 + 6 ÷ 3, and then division would be first not the addition
  • Steve used the word product which means to multiply, not add
