Activities

  1. What are the factors of -8(16 + 2)

  2. What is the coefficient in the expression 6 – 2 + 4n
  1. Write an expression that has two factors: 5 and the sum of two terms

  2. Write a sentence to describe the expression

  1. Circle the terms in the expression below and explain how you know that they are terms.

4+ 7 – 6a + 3

  1. Peter bought c pounds of chicken that cost $2.50 and h pounds of ham that cost $ 3.25 per pound.

a. Write an expression that could be used to calculate the amount of money he spent on chicken and ham.
b.  Explain how to find the total cost if he bought 5 pounds of ham and 8 pounds of chicken.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The factors are 8 and the sum of 16 and 2. Or you can use 8 and 18
  1. The coefficient is 4
  1. Answers will vary.

Possible answers include, but are not limited to:

  • 5 (6 + 4)
  1. Answers may include, but are not limited to:
  • Twice the sum of six and eight, divided by seven
  • Add six and eight and multiply that by two, then divide the product by seven
  • The sum of six and eight times two, divided by seven

Students should define these as terms because they are constants, variables, or a product of a number and variable that are separated by + or –

  1. Answers as follows:

a. 2.50c + 3.25h
b. Acceptable explanations may include, but are not limited to:

  • Multiply 2.50 times 8 to find the total for the chicken:  8(2.5) = 20
  • Multiply 3.25 times 5 to find the total for the ham: 5(3.25) = 16.25
  • Find the sum of the two products: 20 + 16.25
  • Total is $36.25
