Activities

  1. Evaluate the following expressions for a = 2, b = 5, and c = 8

a. a + c – b
b. 4b ÷ a
c. c2 - ab

  1. The volume of a cube can be found with the formula V = s3.  Find the volume of the cube below.

  1. When you sign up for dance class you have a startup fee of $75 and then a monthly fee if $54.  The dance company use the expression 75 + 54m to find out how much it will cost to attend classes.  How much would it cost to take classes for 10 months?

  2. To find the area of a triangle you use the formula A = bh.  Find the area of the triangle drawn below.

  1. You are ordering flashlights and batteries online in case there is a power outage.  Each flashlight costs $4.25 and uses 3 batteries.  The batteries cost $0.50 each.  The shipping cost is a flat rate of $6.25.  Write an equation that can be used to calculate how much it would cost for any number of flashlights along with the necessary batteries. Find the total cost if you order 4 flashlights.
  1. To play laser tag you have to pay $8.00 to get in and then you pay $5.50 for each hour that you stay and play.  Fill in the table below to see how much is will cost to play for 1 – 4 hours.  If you brought $28 with you, what is the maximum number of hours you can play?  Explain

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Answers as follows:

a. 5
b. 10
c. 54

  1.   so V = 27 cubic inches
  1. 75 + 54(10)

75 + 540

$615 total cost for 10 months of dance classes.

  1. A =

A = (4)(3)

A = 12 square inches

  1. Expression: 4.25f + 1.50f + 6.25; Total cost: $29.25

  • 4.25f represents the cost of a flashlight multiplied by the number of flashlights you buy
  • Each battery requires 3 batteries at $0.50 each or $1.50 per flashlight
  • 1.50f represents the cost of batteries multiplied by the number of flashlights that you buy.
  • 6.25 represents the shipping cost
  • To solve the expression you need to replace the variable with the number of flashlights being purchased and then evaluate
    4.25f + 1.50f + 6.25
    4.25(4) + 1.50(4) + 6.25
    17.00 + 6.00 + 6.25
    $29.25 final cost
  1. See table.

         Maximum number of hours you can play is 3.  You don’t have enough to play another hour
