Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

Predict if the outcome of the events below are certain, more likely, less likely, equally likely, or impossible.

  1. All babies born in October will be girls
  1. Thanksgiving day will be in November
  1. The weather predicts that there is a 75% chance it will rain on Monday.  How would you describe the chance of it raining on Monday?
  1. The probability of randomly pulling a blue marble out of a bag is . The probability of randomly pulling a red marble out of the same bag is . The probability of randomly pulling a purple marble out of the same bag is .  What is the probability that you will randomly pull out a green marble from the bag?

  1. You are playing a game with two spinners, you have to spin each one and add up the two numbers that the spinners land on.  The object of the game is to pick three sums that you think you will get and you are the winner when you spin the numbers to give you the sum you picked. Two players picked the following sums

Who has the best chance of winning the game, player A or Player B? Explain your answer.

  1. The probability that you will get a green marble is 0%.  Student work might include but is not limited to,
  • Find the total probability of the marbles that are already in the bag.

  • The current marbles in the bag take up 100% of the bag, so the chance of getting a green marble is 0% because you can’t have more than 100%.

  1.  Part A)

Player A has a better chance of winning compared with player B.  Player B has picked a sum of 10 but the highest number on both spinners is 4.  That mean the highest sum that you can get is 4+4 = 8.  It is impossible for player B to ever will the game with a sum greater than 10 picked. 

            Part B)

The range of numbers that you should pick are 2-8. Reason might include but are not limited to,

  • The smallest number on each spinner is 1 so the lowest sum you can spin is 1 + 1 = 2
  • The largest number on each spinner is 4 so that largest sum you can spin is  4 + 4 = 8
  • The possible sums you can spin are shown in the chart below in red.
