Activities
- Identify possible solutions to systems of equations and draw an example of each.
- Identify the number of solutions each system of equations will have:
- 5y – 2x = 12
5y – 2x = -4
- 5y – 2x = 12
- 2x + y = 7
4x + 2y = 14
- Solve the following system of equations algebraically. Be sure to show all your work and check your answer.
- Solve the following system of equations graphically:
- Amir and his brother are 4 years apart. Amir’s age can be represented by the equation y = x and his brother by the equation y = x + 4. Graph the two equations on the same coordinate plane. What do you notice about the graph, and what does it mean?
Answer Key/Rubric
- Systems of equations can have one solution, no solution, or infinite solutions.
Acceptable drawings may be similar to the following:
- One solution – cross each other at one point
- No solution – lines drawn are parallel
- Infinite solutions – lines overlap; exact same line
- Answers as follows:
- None
- Infinite
- (8, 1)
Acceptable work may include, but is not limited to:
- (-5, 4)
- Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to:
The lines are parallel and will never intersect which means that the two brothers will never be the same age at the same time.
