Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Determine the distance between the given points.  Round your answer to the nearest hundredths if necessary.

  1. Plot the points and determine the distance between (-3, 3) and (2, -8).  Round your answer to the nearest tenths if necessary.

  1. Given the point (-2, 6), name 8 points that are 5 units away.  (Hint: use the Pythagorean triples)

  1. Tommy was stuck on an island in the middle of a lake and decided to swim back to his house.  He started swimming north 500 feet and realized he was headed in the wrong direction.  He turned west and swam 1200 feet and finally reached his house.  Using the graph below with the island at the origin, determine the distance Tommy would have swam if he had headed straight to his house.  Explain how you established your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. 9.43 units
  1. 12.1 units

  1. Possible answers:

  1. 1300 feet
Acceptable responses include, but are not limited to:
  • To use the graph below, count each unit as 100 feet
  • Starting at the island, move 5 units up for north, then 12 units left for west.
  • Use Pythagorean theorem to find the direct distance:  a2 + b2 = c2
  • Substitute into formula: 52 + 122 =c2
  • c = 13
  • Each unit is worth 100 feet so it is 1300 feet
