Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
Questions/activities that grow in complexity
Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Make connections between the text and the content of graphics and charts.

Activities

Identify the title(s) of graphics and charts in a complex organizational text.
Using complete sentences, summarize the titles of graphics and charts in a complex text.

For each of the body paragraphs a graphic and chart is paired with, summarize the main idea of the body paragraph.
Explain the relationship between a graph or chart and the body of text it supports and/or is paired with.

Analyze the content of a graphic or chart and explain, in complete sentences, what ideas the data and/or visuals illustrate.
Analyze how well each graphic and chart works to support the text it is paired with.

Answer Key/Rubric

Students correctly locate all of the titles employed in a complex text, including any of charts or graphics.
Students correctly summarize, in their own words, each of the titles in a complex text.
Students demonstrate understanding of the text of a complex informational text by summarizing the main ideas presented in the written portion.
Students are able to identify how graphics and charts support written text by explaining their relationship. Students explain whether a text supports an idea, clarifies or simplifies a concept, substantiates a claim or highlights a trend that is discusses elsewhere in the document as a whole.
Students are able to verbalize the visual argument of graphics and charts. They are able to explain, interpret and analyze the information being presented in the use of graphics and charts in complex informational texts.
Students are able to evaluate how well graphics and charts support the text they are paired with. Students point out the strengths and weaknesses of graphics and charts in a complex informational text.
