Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. How did humans change the natural environment so we could drive cars?

  2. How do people that do not live near a large body of water get the water they need for their homes?
  1. Write a paragraph to summarize the journey corn takes to get to your kitchen.

  2. Explain how the natural environment during winter effects your daily activities compared to your daily activities during summer.
  1. Many farms were created by destroying forests or prairies.  Do you think it is more important to create these farms to grow food for people or to preserve the natural habitat of many plants and animals?  Write a paragraph to defend your opinion.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Humans built roads.

  2. Water is stored in reservoirs and is pumped through pipes into homes. 
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Corn grows in a field on a farm. 
  • Corn is harvested by a farmer 
  • The farmer sends it to a factory where it is taken off of the cob
  • The corn will either be frozen and sealed into a bag or put into cans
  • The factory then sends it to the supermarket
  • We travel to the supermarket to buy the packaged corn
  • The corn is cooked at home
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Summer
    • Play outside
    • Wear shorts, a t-shirt, and sneakers. 
    • Running and playing baseball
    • Need to drink lots of water to stay hydrated
    • Like to use the air conditioner to cool off
  • Winter
    • Too cold to play outside
    • No running as I may slip on ice
    • Wear pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and a heavy jacket to keep warm
    • Wear a hat and gloves
    • Like to sit under a warm blanket and drink hot chocolate to warm up
