Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Calculate   4:3 = 24:x

  2. Define ratio.

  3. Methane is a compound consisting of a 1: 4 ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms.
If a sample of methane contains 1255 hydrogen atoms, how many carbon atoms are present? Please show your work.

  4. Physics has taught us that weights of objects on the moon are proportional to their weights on Earth. Suppose a 210 pound man weighs 35 pounds on the moon. What will a 120 pound woman weigh on the moon? Please show your work.
  1. Based on information from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture the table below presents the ratio of rabid cats to dogs in Pennsylvania over a four year period. Formulate a conclusion using the provided data.

  1. In humans, abundant body hair (F) is a dominate trait, while having little body hair (f) is recessive. Complete the Punnett square below then calculate the genotype and phenotype ratios of the offspring.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. 18

  2. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities.
  1. Step 1: Cross multiple
    Step 2: 1 carbon atom + 4 hydrogen atoms = 5 carbon atoms
    Step 3: 1255 hydrogen atoms/5 carbon atoms = 251 carbon atoms
  1. 210 lb./35 lb. = 6
    120 lb./6 = 20 lb.
The woman will weigh 20 lbs. on the moon.
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but not be limited to:
Between the years 2008 to 2011 the ratio of rabid cats to dogs remained fairly constant. Rabid cats ranged from a low of 50 cats in 2011 to a high of 56 rabid cats in 2010. Dogs ranged from 3 rabid dogs in 2008 and 2010 to 4 rabid dogs in 2009 and 2010. Based on this data it could be concluded that more dog owners vaccinate their dogs against rabies than cat owners. (OR There are more feral cats in Pennsylvania than stray dogs…; The large number of farms in Pennsylvania support a sizeable population of barn cats…)
