Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. List the levels of taxonomy from the broadest level to the most specific level.

  2. What are the 5 kingdoms?

  3. What is a dichotomous key?
  1. How are the organisms in the plant kingdom similar to those in the animal kingdom?  How are they different?
  1. Use the following list of organisms to create a dichotomous key:  elephant, dolphin, marigold, palm tree, amoeba, and yeast.

  3. A dichotomous key is tool used to identify an organism based on a series of questions.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Both are living.
    • Both have many different species.
    • Both need air, space, food, and water.
    • Plants produce their own food.  Animals must eat other organisms.
    • Animals breathe oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
    • Plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and release oxygen.
