Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Organic molecules must have what element in them?

  2. Carbon atoms can bind with other carbon atoms with what type of bond?
  1. Draw an organic molecule that you have studied in this course.

  2. Some compounds contain carbon but are considered inorganic. Give an example of one of these compounds.
  1. Many gasses, liquids, and solids are found in our environment. What element would a scientist need to test for in order to determine if the substance is organic? Why would they need to test for this?

  2. Scientists have figured out a way to add DNA to a bacterial cell so the cell can make an organic molecule that the human body would normally produce. Give an example of a carbon-containing molecule and how it helps the body.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Carbon

  2. Covalent bonds
  1. Acceptable answers include, but are not limited to:
(a molecule with carbon in it. For example: methane, glucose, etc)

  1. Acceptable answers include, but are not limited to:
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Carbon monoxide
  1. Acceptable answers include, but are not limited to:
  • A scientist should test for carbon because all organic compounds contain carbon within them.
  1. Acceptable answers include, but are not limited to:
  • Insulin, this helps to take glucose from blood and convert it so it can be stored within the body.
  • Human growth hormone, helps those who need to regulate body fluids, heart function, along with muscle and bone growth.
