Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Which one is larger: DNA or a chromosome?

  2. Where in a cell would you find all of the following: DNA, chromosomes, and genes.

  3. Half of your genes came from your mom, and half came from your dad. You received one copy of each gene from each of your parents. These copies of the genes are known as what?

  4. Put the following terms in order according to size from largest to smallest: allele, gene, nucleus, chromosome, DNA

  5. If the DNA in a human were referred to as a “book,” what aspect of a book would represent a chromosome, and what would represent a gene? Explain your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. DNA

  2. In the nucleus

  3. Alleles
  1. Nucleus, chromosome, DNA, gene, allele
  1. Acceptable answers include, but are not limited to:
  • A chromosome could be a chapter in that book, and a paragraph could be a gene.  This is because a gene is found within a chromosome, just like a paragraph is found within a chapter.  Both parts help to make the book, just as the gene and chromosome help to create the cell.
