Why Go Green?

Objectives

In this unit, students will understand the importance of natural resources, how humans use natural resources, and how human use affects the environment. Students will:

  • identify biological requirements of humans.

  • understand what natural resources are and why they are important.

  • identify several ways we use natural resources.

  • identify how human actions affect the environment.

  • identify ways to conserve natural resources.

  • know that there are laws and regulations for the environment.

  • demonstrate how to recycle, reuse, and reduce at home and school.

    Remind, reread, or retell the story of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to your students: The land was beautiful, and colorful trees grew everywhere until. . . Once-ler came to town. The land was left gray and desolate. Say to students, “There is only one tree seed left, and it is up to the reader to decide what will be done with it. What would you do with it?” Hand out Performance Assessment worksheets to students to complete. Give them a seed and have them plant it, and journal about the plant as they care for it.
