Objectives

In this unit, students will examine tools and their functions and take a closer look at computers. Students will:

  • identify how tools help solve problems.
  • identify and describe what parts make up a system.
  • group tools by their function.
  • use tools to solve a problem.
  • identify a computer and the different parts that make a computer.
  • identify basic operations and concepts behind computers.
  • identify basics in using a computer.

    Short-Answer Item:

    Have students use the computer, manipulating the keyboard and mouse to find information about an animal at National Geographic for Kids. Write the Web site on the board for students: http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/. Explain to students that you would like them to find information about an animal, or assign each student an animal to research. Then, ask students to record two facts about that animal on the Animal Information Sheet (S-K2-18_Animal Information Sheet.doc).

    Students can look at more animals if time permits. Remind students that they can click on the Animal tab to go to more animal information. Under the Animal tab, they can click on links to see amazing animals or features. For example, if a student chose the bald eagle, two facts are:

    • Forty years ago there were laws made to protect bald eagles.
    • Female bald eagles are larger than males.

    Performance Assessment:

    Display the pictures in Trace a Telephone (S-K2-18-1 Trace A Telephone.docx). Students look at the picture of phones and tell how they have changed over time. Students then predict what the phone of the future will look like. They should:

    • tell what the phone of the future will be able to do.
    • draw a picture of the new phone.
    • describe how the phone of the future will be used.
