Geographic Range and Habitat

map
The Cloncurry is an Australian parrot.

The Cloncurry Parrot is widespread across mainland Australia but tends toward open scrubforests, semi-arid woodlands and farms.

Physical Characteristics

3
This is a small to medium parrot, about 13 inches tall. It is predominantly pale green in color with some yellow mottling and red and blue markings on the head and back. It has a long tail and a distinctive yellow ring behind the neck. Females tend to be more diluted in coloration.

Habits

4
Cloncurry parrots are usually found in pairs or small groups. These groups leave roosting trees at dawn and fly to waterholes or little streams to drink before foraging. They feed on the ground often together with Red-rumped Parrots and various Rosellas. Before sunset, they return to water holes again to drink before returning to roosting trees. Cloncurry parrots are generally sedentary; only occasionally partaking in a weather determined migration. Flight is similar to Rosella: when moving from tree to tree flies down near to ground before gliding up to higher branch. Call is a light whistling sound and a chattering when feeding in trees; makes no sound when on ground. Males perform a courtship display in which he stands in an upright position with nodding head, open wings and spread tail before the female.

Diet

5
Diet consists of grass seeds, plant material, fruits, berries, flowers, buds, insects and their larvae.

Reproduction

6
Sexual maturity is reached after two years. Breeding takes place from August to January and is preceded by the courtship display. A tree hollow close to the ground and lined with wood dust is the usual nesting site for the clutch of 5-6 eggs. The female Conclurry incubates the eggs for approximately 21 days, and both parents participate in the rearing of the young.

Natural History

7
None found at this time.

Captive History

8
Cloncurry Parrots do very well in captivity. They can initially be somewhat shy and nervous; however soon becomes used to keeper and aviary.

Conservation

9
They are fairly common, but are becoming less common in recent years in areas where scrubland has been converted to farmland.
