World Languages

The interlocking rings above illustrate the connected nature of the five goals of world language learning as recognized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. These goals are the focus of the exemplary world language classrooms in our state.

Communicating in a second language is essential for students coming of age in the 21st Century. The growing interdependence of peoples and cultures challenges schools to prepare students to participate in local and larger world communities. Second language studies delivered in well-developed, multi-year programs enable students to communicate at high levels of proficiency with cultural understanding.

World language students gain greater insight into their own language and culture by comparing and contrasting them with other languages and cultures. These students make connections with other disciplines and access knowledge unavailable to mono-lingual speakers. Graduates of extended, standards-based world language programs have an enhanced ability to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals.
