Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define classify.
  1. Identify one trait you could classify a human by.
  1. Classify the following animals:  alligator, duck, turtle, shark, chicken, clown fish, snake, penguin, and puffer fish
  1. Compare and contrast a turtle and a dolphin. Classify them based on a similarity and a difference.
  1. “Dogs and cats are different, but they are also alike.” Develop a logical argument as to why this is true.
  1. Critique the following statement: “A squirrel is a mammal and a frog is an amphibian, therefore there is no way to classify them by their similarities.”

  1. To classify means to arrange people or things into different groups based on ways that they are alike.

  • Fish: shark, clown fish, puffer fish

  • Turtles and dolphins are similar because they both live in Florida.
  • Turtles and dolphins are different because one is a mammal and one is a reptile.

  • This is true because dogs and cats are alike in many ways.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • This statement is partially true.
  • Squirrels and frogs are different because squirrels are mammals and frogs are amphibians.
  • However, this statement is also false because there are similarities between frogs and squirrels.
  • For example, both are animals and both have legs.
