Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Define need.
- Identify at least two needs of a human.
- Identify a need of an animal and predict what would happen if the animal suddenly lost access to that item.
- Plants need light. There are two plants. One is taller than the other. Both are competing for sunlight. Make predictions about what might happen to the smaller plant.
- Construct a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the needs of plants and animals.

- To need is to require something because it is essential or very important.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Light, food, water, shelter, and oxygen
- Answers will vary. Students will identify a need of an animal and make a prediction as to what will happen if it is suddenly gone.
Example response:
- Shelter is a need, so if animals need shelter, they could not live without it.
- Without shelter, animals would not be protected from the weather.
- Without shelter animals might have a hard time staying warm.
- Without a shelter animals might be more open to their predators
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- The smaller plant may not get enough light.
- The smaller plant may not be able to compete with the bigger plant.
- The smaller plant might die from lack of light.
