Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. Define need. 
  1. Identify at least two needs of a human.
  1. Identify a need of an animal and predict what would happen if the animal suddenly lost access to that item.
  1. Plants need light. There are two plants. One is taller than the other. Both are competing for sunlight. Make predictions about what might happen to the smaller plant.
  1. Construct a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the needs of plants and animals.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. To need is to require something because it is essential or very important.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Light, food, water, shelter, and oxygen
  1. Answers will vary.  Students will identify a need of an animal and make a prediction as to what will happen if it is suddenly gone.

Example response:

  • Shelter is a need, so if animals need shelter, they could not live without it.
  • Without shelter, animals would not be protected from the weather.
  • Without shelter animals might have a hard time staying warm.
  • Without a shelter animals might be more open to their predators
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The smaller plant may not get enough light.
  • The smaller plant may not be able to compete with the bigger plant.
  • The smaller plant might die from lack of light.
